The twelfth episode of our season on the awesome movie year of 1987 features our future cult classic pick, Bruce Robinson’s Withnail and I. Written and directed by Bruce Robinson and starring Paul McGann, Richard E. Grant, Richard Griffiths and Ralph Brown, Withnail and I was inspired by Robinson’s own experiences as a young man in the 1960s.

I saw Withnail in an art house theater in San Francisco in 1987. I had read a review in Daily Variety which I subscribed to at the time. I am almost the same age as Bruce Robinson so even though I am American, I probably caught more of the references to 1969.
By the way, we DO have Deep Heat in America. Or we used to. It’s a product similar to Ben Gay.
